This club, which has been established as a National Historic Landmark, is famous for hosting many national championships, including the National Amateur, the PGA Championship, and 7 U.S. Opens. Oakmont gained additional notoriety for its furrowed bunkers during the 1973 U.S. Open. Johnny Miller established the U.S. Open 18 hole record with a 63 in the final round in 1973, regarded by some as the finest round of golf ever played. Hole #1 was voted the tour's most difficult hole by PGA of America. GOLF Magazine ranked this course several times in the category of the Top 100 Courses in the U.S. and GOLFWEEK ranked it among America's 100 Best Classical Courses. A program to clear out trees was completed in 1999 with the eviction of a couple of hundred hardwoods in order to restore a grand old design to the open-spaced terrain that existed when the course was built in 1903. Even though carts are available, the club personnel would prefer you to walk the course.
