You probably know Golden as the home of the Coors brewery. But that's just TV. Now there's a real reason to head there: Fossil Trace, the most educational golf course on our list. In its past lives, the property that is now fossil trace golf club was used for clay mining and research into fossilized palm fronds and dinosaur footprints. There's rusted mining equipment in the rough, an old kiln chimney splitting the first fairway, and 20-foot high sandstone pillars on the par-5 12th. You can even see fossils behind the 12th green. The front 9 features a 96-yard par 3 and a par 5 of 659 yards. Designer Jim Engh infused Fossil Trace with hints of Scotland and Ireland: Muirfield-like fairways fall off on both sides, and a 150-foot deep, kidney-shaped green at the 186-yard 11th borrows from Ballybunion's Cashen golf course. -excerpt from the article Top Ten You Can Play, GOLF MAGAZINE, February 2004
